Although we think of our organs as the operators running our bodies, it’s really our hormones. Our hormones are silent workhorses in our bodies, regulating most of our systems. They act as chemical messengers, coordinating everything from fertility to moods to metabolism. Aging can create a decline in hormone production. This is especially true after a woman goes through menopause. It’s declining hormones that are behind those annoying hot flashes and weight gains. Men aren’t immune to declining hormones with age, either. For men, declining hormones can lead to fatigue and decreased libido.

At The Skin Elite, we help our patients treat these hormone deficiencies with bioidentical hormones. We use pellet therapy for testosterone and estrogen, and oral tablets for progesterone.

What are bioidentical hormones?

You may have heard of hormone replacement using synthetic estrogen and others. That is not what we do at The Skin Elite. We use bioidentical hormones that are chemically identical to those your body produces. They are derived from plant estrogens. The common hormones that are matched are estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

What causes hormone imbalances?

There are many possible causes for a hormone imbalance. Causes vary depending upon which hormones or glands are affected. These are common causes of hormonal imbalance:

  • Eating disorders
  • Medications
  • Stress
  • Adrenal insufficiency
  • Pituitary tumor
  • Injury or trauma
  • Cancer treatments
  • Diabetes
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypogonadism
  • Cushing syndrome
  • Thyroiditis
  • Hyperfunctioning thyroid nodules
  • Congenital adrenal hyperplasia

These are causes of hormone imbalance that are unique to women:

  • Menopause
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • PCOS
  • Hormone drugs, such as birth control pills
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency

What are the symptoms of hormonal imbalance in women?

Women experience a variety of symptoms when their hormone levels become imbalanced:

  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Hot flashes
  • Weight gain
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Cold hand and feet
  • Decreased libido

What are the symptoms of hormonal imbalance in men?

Although not as well-known as hormonal imbalance in women, men also experience symptoms from this. These are consistent with low testosterone levels:

  • Chronic fatigue
  • Loss of muscle mass
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Increased body fat
  • Decreased bone mass
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Mood changes
  • Depression
  • Irritability
  • Brain fog

Would I benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement isn’t right for everyone. If you’re experiencing some of the symptoms of hormone imbalance, we run a comprehensive blood panel at The Skin Elite. These labs identify any hormone and/or vitamin deficiencies.

Some patients aren’t right for these treatments.

If you have or have had breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, blood clots in your legs or lungs, stroke, liver disease, or some forms of vaginal bleeding, you should not use hormone replacement therapy.

Also, if you aren’t having problems with menopausal symptoms and if you started menopause after age 45, you do not need hormone replacement therapy to maintain your health. We can discuss other options for addressing potential osteoporosis and heart disease if you have some risk factors.

Men with normal levels of testosterone, from 300-900 nanograms per deciliter, don’t benefit from hormone replacement therapy.

What delivery methods are used for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?

At The Skin Elite, we use two delivery methods for our BHRT: pellet therapy and oral tablets. We use pills for progesterone. For testosterone and estrogen, we use implanted pellets. Here’s how that works.

Inserting your bioidentical hormone pellet takes just a few minutes at our offices on Northwest Military Highway. We first numb the insertion site, usually a small patch of skin just above the buttocks. Then we make a tiny incision and insert the pellet. We cover the incision with a bandage and that’s it. It takes just a few minutes and you’re on your way.

What results can I expect from bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone optimization varies with the patient. Most patients report some symptom resolution in as little as two to four weeks, but full hormone optimization may take up to six months.

For women, pellet therapy can improve these conditions, among others:

  • Menopause
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Low sex drive
  • Osteoporosis
  • Heart disease
  • PMS

For men, pellet therapy can improve these conditions, among others:

  • Andropause
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Low sex drive
  • Osteoporosis
  • Heart disease

Is there any downtime after receiving my bioidentical hormones?

No, you can get right back to work or your other normal activities.

How long do the results from bioidentical hormone replacement therapy last?

A single pellet lasts between 3-4 months. Oral progesterone varies depending upon the dosage.
