What is the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet?

ProLon is a five-day meal program that shifts your body into fasting mode. This allows your cells to reap the benefits of fasting, while not actually having to, well, fully fast! The ProLon program provides limited food and contains everything you need for your five-day treatment. 

Where did ProLon come from?

ProLon was created by Valter Longo, Ph.D., director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. The program was based on years of research on both animals and humans. Through this research, Dr. Longo developed a patented eating plan that activates the body’s fasting mode but provides enough food to simultaneously nourish cells and support metabolic balance. 

This approach to fasting with food reduces some of the risks that come with extreme fastings, such as very low blood sugar and blood pressure, reduced immune function, fatigue, and low productivity. 

Who is a good candidate for ProLon?

ProLon is intended for use by healthy people who want to enhance their health and wellbeing, and by overweight people who want to proactively manage their weight in a straightforward, healthy way. Unlike other fasting diets, the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet has been shown to help the patient maintain healthy levels of systolic blood pressure while still reducing abdominal fat and waist circumference.

The ProLon FMD is not for everyone. If you fit any of these criteria, you should not use the ProLon FMD:

  • You have a known, diagnosed, or suspected eating disorder
  • You have a fever, cough, diarrhea, or signs of an active infection
  • You are underweight
  • You are breastfeeding or are pregnant
  • You have dietary restrictions
  • You are under the age of 18 or over the age of 70
  • You have experienced protein deficiency or are malnourished
  • You have nut or sesame seed allergies

How should the ProLon diet be taken?

The diet should be taken for five consecutive days. All of the foods are provided for each day. On the sixth day, the patient will transition back to their normal diet. The program provides a meal card that recommends how to consume the items for each day, but each day’s items can be consumed in any order you wish, as long as you only eat each day’s items during that day. 

Can you drink coffee while on the ProLon diet?

Yes, the plan allows you to have one cup of black coffee per day.

When would be a good age to start the ProLon diet?

The only age restrictions are that you must be over 18 and under 70. Otherwise, age isn’t a determinant; the desire to change your life with weight loss is what matters. This plan shows real results; that’s why we offer it at The Skin Elite for our patients.

Is the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet safe?

This is a safe way to lose weight. It doesn’t involve any pills or injections. But it does need to be monitored by the experienced nurses at The Skin Elite. There are a few things you should not do while on the five-day ProLon FMD:

  • No strenuous exercise 
  • Driving long distances should be avoided
  • No prolonged sun exposure
  • Avoid hot tubs or saunas
  • If your work is strenuous, you should use this diet only on time off

Can you work out while on the ProLon diet?

No strenuous exercise should occur. Your calorie levels are too low to support it. The ProLon FMD allows for only slow walking, stretching, and light yoga during the five days on the program. 

What results can I expect from the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet?

In a clinical study of participants who completed a 5-day ProLon cycle once a month for three months, the average weight loss at the end of the study was about 5.1 pounds. This can primarily from abdominal fat.
